Cool as ice: LED Light Sheet installations at ME London
LED Light Sheet helps set award winning hotel ME London aglow with integrated lighting features in the Atrium Champagne Bar, Marconi Lounge and STK Restaurant.
The first hotel to be fully designed by Foster + Partners - both inside and out - has resulted in a continuity of architecture based on a monochromatic concept of dark and light. ChapmanBDSP worked closely with the architects on a lighting scheme where much of the feature lighting was integrated within bespoke furniture and interior designs. To accomplish this, a great deal of co-ordination took place between the architects, the interior furniture manufacturer (Mivan) and ChapmanBDSP.
Located on the first floor, within the soaring volume of a nine storey high pyramid, is the main reception and Atrium Champagne Bar. Bespoke lighting solutions were built to suit the requirements of the space and included the champagne ice tray which featured perimeter edges illuminated with LED Light Sheet.
Farhad Rahim of ChapmanBDSPsaid: ‘We had used Applelec’s LED Light Sheet in work for Molton Brown where its thermal LED management ensured products could be displayed without heat damage. For the Atrium Bar, Marconi Lounge and STK Restaurant, we again selected this bespoke product.’
The cool operation of LED Light Sheet, achieved by a unique LED heat sink, ensured it could be successfully integrated within the perimeter of the triangular tray. Created with an IP67 rating, three LED Light Sheet panels with flame polished edges at each joining point were specified to aid the even distribution light. The ice itself was illuminated from below with fibre optic lighting heads located within drain holes.
Farhad Rahim explains: ‘The detailing possible with LED Light Sheet ensures it can be constructed to meet specific requirements that can’t be accommodated by other lighting units. From initial drafts through to installation support, the service from Applelec really set them apart.’
In the Marconi Lounge, the bar counter includes an illuminated surface with integrated LED Light Sheet overlaid with frosted glass. A chrome bezel edge provides screening of the panel’s individual LED modules to provide a completely even distribution of light. In the STK Restaurant meanwhile, the bar counter again contains integrated LED Light Sheet to illuminate the bottles displayed on top yet, due to the nature of the installation, does not pose a problem with heat dissipation on to the bottles. To illuminate the large, curved bar surface, several LED Light Sheet panels were created in jigsaw-like sections according to templates designed by Applelec.
Applelec’s Laura Cook said: ‘We carefully planned each LED Light Sheet joining point using templates to create a truly made-to-measure light surface for the bar top. With production all taking place at Applelec’s UK site, we were able to adjust and refine the construction of each panel to ensure it all fitted together perfectly.’
